Say NO to Lethal Injection in California!
Gov.
Schwarzenegger is wasting money trying to kick start executions in California
while slashing funding for vital services. We need you to act now to stop
executions and to tell the Governor to stop wasting money on the broken death
penalty.
On January 4, 2010, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
(CDCR) proposed minor changes to its lethal injection procedures and opened
a fifteen-day comment period. These minor changes create more civil rights
and civil liberties problems, not less. The procedures still do not protect
the religious rights of the person to be executed, do not protect the rights
of women to be executed, and treat unfairly the family of the person to be
executed. An analysis of the changes is available here.
Ironically, the same week he released these regulations, Gov. Schwarzenegger
called for $3.5 billion in cuts to prison spending, to increase funding for
education. The actual budget he released, however, barely touches prison spending
while making draconian cuts to vital services for all Californians.
Please take action today!
Tell
the CDCR and the Governor
that executions should not resume in California; instead, the Governor should
convert all 700 death sentences to permanent imprisonment to save $1 billion
in 5 years. That is the best way to protect all Californians and also protect
funding for critical needs like education and public safety.
Submit your comments online right now. We have created sample letters for
you to use, but encourage you to make any points about the death penalty or
the budget that you would like.
Thank you for taking action to end the costly and ineffective death penalty
in California.

Death Penalty v. Public Safety Jobs: Recap of Community Forum in Hayward
On a warm and quiet Thursday evening in September, Reverend John Wichman graciously opened his parish doors to community members, local organizations, and parishioners concerned that the death penalty is wasting valuable community resources that could otherwise be devoted to public safety. The event sponsored by the Alameda County Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, featured panelists Ray Samuels, Darryl Stallworth, TC Wilson, and Natasha Minsker. Each panelist shared their experiences with and perspectives on the death penalty. After offering both their personal and professional stories, the panelists engaged the audience in a discussion of the glaring flaws that exist in the criminal justice system which overflow into the administration of the death penalty...
